Our Ministry of Community Life

The Community Life Ministry seeks to intentionally work at building relationships and community within the  Wooster Mennonite congregation.

The Community Life Ministry determined three necessary functions of the ministry:

  • Oversight of kitchen
  • Carry-in coordination as much as possible
  • Food provision
  • Plan congregational activities

Recent reflections from the Community Life Team:

You are invited to the “Winter Beat the Blahs Game Night!”  Sat. Jan. 28, 6-8 pm.  Please bring a finger food and a game you enjoy!

Now, switching topics:  If you remember back to Sun., Dec. 4, many of us gathered for a pizza lunch after worship in an effort to get to know our new attenders (hereafter referred to as "Newbies").  There were some who couldn't make it that day, and some of us have trouble remembering whose stories are whose, so I thought that it might be helpful to do a segment in the next couple of Body Builders that I like to call:  Spotlight on Newbies

  Spotlight on Newbies

Our first newbie couple is Jacob and Whitney Wenger.  Jacob is currently working at the OARDC, where he is a Graduate Research Associate earning credit toward his Ph.D. in Entomology.  Whitney is employed at Ashland University, where she is a Student Accounts Representative.

Jacob and Whitney grew up in Pennsylvania, about an hour from each other, Jacob in Petersburg, and Whitney in Orbisonia.  They are both the middle of three children.  Jacob grew up in the Church of the Brethren, and Whitney’s family was involved in a Methodist church until she was 14, when they switched to a Church of the Brethren church.

 6 Questions:

1. How did you meet?

Jacob and Whitney were both involved in the District Youth Ministry Team, which is a traveling group of teenagers in the Middle PA District Church of the Brethren that plans and leads services at district churches.  They also participated in county and district band festivals and were in their schools’ respective marching bands.  (Jacob plays saxophone and Whitney plays flute.)  They had seen each other around but didn’t really get to know each other until their senior year of high school.  Each went to the others proms together and started dating around that time.  They then worked as counselors at the District’s summer church camp for two summers.

 2. A humorous event while you were dating?

Jacob attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana, where he obtained his Bachelor’s in Biology and Environmental Studies.  Whitney attended Grove City College in Grove City, PA, where she earned her degree in Psychology with minors in Religion and Marriage/Family Studies.  They always joked that Ohio was the only thing that stood between them for the 3 1/2 years they dated, and now find it ironic that they ended up here after hating it for so long!

 3. A favorite restaurant that you both enjoy.

Their favorite restaurant currently is the India Pavilion in State College, PA.  It’s a delicious Indian buffet that they go to every chance they can!

 4. Hobby or interest that you share.

One of their favorite hobbies is hiking.  They have gone out to Memorial Park a few times and have found lots of different trails that aren’t necessarily marked.  They also enjoy baking, playing Nintendo games, watching movies and football and reading.

 5. Pets

The Wengers have 2 cats right now.  Hollis Brown is feisty and full of energy.  Eleanor Rigby is more of a refined recluse.  The cats don’t really get along very well, and Eleanor spends most of her time hiding from Hollis.  If anyone is looking for a friendly cat for a one-pet home, she would be great for you!

 6. Something you like about Wooster Mennonite Church

Whitney and Jacob love how welcoming WMC is!  They looked for a long time since leaving their home churches to find a church they could become a part of, and WMC is the first one they have agreed on and found so much fulfillment in!

Note to Jacob and Whitney:  WMC is so glad to have you in our fellowship!
